For someone who hasn’t dressed up for Halloween in over eight years, you’d swear I hated the holiday. But I actually really, really like Halloween. There just never seemed to be any big plans for it over the years, and I guess I didn’t try very hard to do something.
This year I was determined to end my eight year streak and dress up. I knew my costume had to be inexpensive and easy to put together, but it also had to be a little more creative than ‘shoving a pair of bunny ears on’, as my friend would say. So, with a little searching on Pinterest, the idea of dressing as a mime sounded perfect.
And then with two friends on board, the idea of three mimes became even more perfect.
Since we already all owned black pants and black shoes, the only things we needed to buy were black and white striped shirts (I found the perfect one a Joe Fresh), white gloves, red bandanas, black suspenders and black berets. And let’s not forget about the most important thing – the white face makeup.
Instead of spending 10 dollars or more on one red bandana, I went to a fabric store and picked up a meter of red fabric and then just cut the material into three sections. Easy, and so much cheaper!!! (Am I ready for a sewing machine now?!).
One of my friends won tickets to Bat Dance; a local dance that takes place every Halloween here in St. John’s and the only way to attend is by winning tickets from the radio station. It’s a big Halloween event! So, not only was I excited about actually dressing up this year, but I was also really looking forward to going to the dance on Saturday night since I had never been before.
The girls came over to my house earlier that night and we had so much fun doing our makeup and getting ready together. It brought me back to my University days where you’d spend hours getting ready before you went out at night. Actually, one of the things I’m looking forward to about our wedding (out of the million), is having a few hours just like Saturday night with all of my bridesmaids and mom getting ready together!
This costume was so much fun!
The entire night we were doing our mime actions…..even on the dance floor! Although people would come up to us as we were talking and say we weren’t very quiet for mimes!!
We all agreed that our costumes turned out great, but we also all agreed that what really made the difference was having three mimes together. We definitely stood out at Bat Dance.
Is it bad that I’m already thinking about ideas for next years costume?
Happy Halloween, everyone! Tell me, do you dress up every year? What was your favourite costume?
Until next time.
