Last Christmas, Charley turned 12 on New Year’s Ev

Last Christmas, Charley turned 12 on New Year’s Eve, and I remember I couldn’t help but wonder, “what if this is our last Christmas together”? Charley was perfectly healthy then, but I guess just like a lot of dog owners do, as the years go by, you start to think about your time and how it’s getting limited. In some ways I think I was trying to prepare myself for the day we would have to say goodbye. But no matter how much I thought about it, nothing could have ever prepared me.
A few months ago, that day unfortunately came and we lost Charley. And it hasn’t been the same for us ever since. In a lot of ways, months later, it’s been even harder since the realization that she’s gone forever is starting to sink in.
This Christmas just wasn’t the same without her, and we missed her in a million ways. Even beyond the everyday reminders, her ornaments were all over the tree; her stocking, which normally would have been filled with treats and toys, was empty. The Christmas walks didn’t happen, the reminders when we were out at Christmas festivities that we didn’t have to rush home were constant, and going to the cabin—my favourite place to relax together over the holidays— was painful. But most of all, there was just always the constant looming feeling that she was missing.
On December 31st, Charley would have turned 13, so in her memory we went for a walk to one of her favourite places. Since I didn’t share any pictures of our time together last Christmas during the holidays and her birthday, I’m wanting to do it now because it will always be a special one for us!
While I could write paragraphs upon paragraphs explaining what Charley meant to us, I’ll just use one word instead….everything. She meant everything to us.
It’s taken me days to put this together and I honestly don’t know when I’ll (actually, we’ll) be able to watch this again! But, like the saying goes, “how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard”.
We would have given anything to have her with us this Christmas!
