It’s officially that time when I start to think of clothing I’d love to add for spring and summer.
Yes, even though it’s the end of May, I’m still thinking about spring clothing. I’m serious when I say most days it still feels like winter here in Newfoundland. In fact, I was at the park on Sunday and saw multiple people in big, puffy jackets, hats, and gloves. I was freezing myself, so I should have dressed that way too, but I absolutely refuse to wear any winter clothing come May 1st. It’s a rigid rule of mine, but it has to be or my spring clothes will never see the light of day!
Some will say there’s no such thing as spring in Newfoundland. Others will say spring starts in June. Fun fact – we usually wait to plant flowers or vegetables here until after Fathers Day because we should be in the clear of frost by then. As for summer, most would agree we get two months; July and August (although it’s also known for the weather to plummet after the St. John’s Regatta Day holiday which is the first week of August).
But regardless of the exact timelines, it’s clear we’re very, very limited with nice weather. While I love my home, every year I constantly ask myself why I still live here because of the darn weather!
Okay, I’ve gotten a little sidetracked here (I swear weather is one that us Newfoundlander’s are fixated on!). The point is, I’m in desperate need of new clothes and now is the time to grab them. Every year I never learn my lesson and, by the time we get nice weather, I’m devastated to find nothing in my size after rummaging through the slim selection of summer items that are left.
This year I want to be ahead of the game, so I’ve done a few things to help. The first step was cleaning out my closet(s) so I’m completely up to date with what I have (I’ll have to do another post all about that one!). The second thing was putting together a clothing wish list. I’m hoping this will help me be more intentional with any future purchases. I’ve included on-trend items for 2024, with both needs and wants because, hey a girl can dream (although, lets be honest, if I was really dreaming, this list would be so much longer!!).
Linen Vest/ Jeans/ Linen Pants/ Baseball Hat/ Silver Earrings/ Striped Sweater/ Crew Neck Sweater/ Sunglasses/ Jean Shorts/ Crossbody Bag/ Sneakers/ Sandals/ Flip Flops
Linen Vest – My biggest ‘want’ of them all. Vests are very trendy right now, and I love how they go perfectly with jeans, pants, and shorts. (Edit: As soon as I published this post, the Gap linen vest in white sold out. I’m so disappointed!! I’m linking this one in it’s place).
Jeans – And this is probably my biggest ‘need’ of them all. I’m in desperate need of new jeans, but I’ve been struggling for a while to find a pair that I love! My goal is to spend time trying on different styles, and really get a feel for what looks best on my body and with different shoes (isn’t figuring out footwear the hardest part?).
Linen Pants – The perfect pants for both warmer and cooler weather, and I love how you can dress them up or down.
Baseball Hat – While trucker hats are now on the rise, I’m still eyeing the New York Yankees baseball hat that’s been around for a while.
Silver Earrings – Silver jewelry has been making its way back, and I’d love to add some new earrings to the rotation.
Striped Sweater & Crew Neck Sweater – As you can imagine with our weather, regardless of the season, sweaters are a staple in my closet.
Sunglasses – I usually wait until my sister gives me her hand-me-downs (she’s an optometrist with a small sunglass obsession…thank you sis!!), but for the price point , I don’t think I can resist these Tik Tok favourites (aka. the Celine knock-offs).
Jean Shorts – A classic style of jean shorts will never go out of style. Since I can’t fit in the ones I currently have, jean shorts are a ‘need’ on my list.
Crossbody Bag – Summer is the time of the year when my regular purse doesn’t get used as much and, instead, I’m always reaching for casual crossbody bags.
Sneakers – The Adidas Sambas has been the “it” sneaker for a while, and I think they’re still perfect for the season ahead.
Sandals – My sister generously gave me her Sam Edelman sandals a few years ago, and since they’ve been my most worn summer item, a new pair is in order. I’m torn between repurchasing (since I know they are unbelievably comfortable), or going with the cheaper alternative from Amazon.
Flip Flops – When I first saw that platform flip flops were on the rise, I’ll be honest and say that I was not a fan (my early 2000’s wardrobe flashed before my eyes!). After seeing these on Instagram for a while and how they’re paired with so many different outfits, I’m actually starting to now love the look. Here’s a cheaper alternative from the Gap.
I just also realized I have my nephews bar mitzvah next month and a wedding in August so I’ll have to keep that in mind as I may want to get a dress or jumpsuit for those events. With a quick search, these all caught my eye: Mango/ Mango/ Banana Republic/ RW&Co./ RW&Co.
Here’s a short list of some items that I’ve seen that are really popular for spring and summer right now and ones that I’m also struggling to accept:
Polo neck shirts
Tie front blouses/ prairie tops
Flare tube tops
Asymmetrical tops
Sheer tops
Boxer shorts
Cuffed jeans
Mesh ballet flats
Barrell leg pants
Knitted vests/maxi dresses
Rosettes on everything
Adidas track pants/ shorts
‘Never say never’ though, right? Do you follow the seasons trends?
Until next time, friend.
